[Epidermal inhibitory pentapeptide] This pentapeptide, called also EPP [epidermal pentapeptide] with the sequence pEEDSG (pyroGlu-Glu-Asp-Ser-Gly) has been isolated from mouse backskin (Elgjo and Reichelt, 1988; Elgjo et al, 1991). pEEDSG shows some activities of cytokines although it is usually not classified as such due to its small size (see also: regulatory peptide factors).
EIP inhibits proliferation of epithelial cells in mouse backskin and normal epidermal cell proliferation in vitro at a restricted and low dose level (Elgjo et al, 1991). EIP probably functions as an endogenous inhibitor of
