[EF-hand domains]
This domain comprises approximately 40 amino acids and may occur in single or multiple pairs in proteins. It is one of the most common protein motifs found in nature (Henikoff et al, 1997; Kawasaki et al, 1998; Lewit-Bentley and Rety, 2000). The domain is involved in binding intracellular calcium (Bhattacharya et al, 2004) and occurs in regulatory and structural proteins. In regulatory proteins, binding of calcium induces conformational changes, whereas in structural proteins no such changes occur (Nelson et al, 2002; Yap et al, 1999; for general overview see also: Chazin, 2011).
