[EGFR-coamplified and overexpressed protein] The approved gene symbol is VOPP1 [vesicular overexpressed in cancer prosurvival protein 1].

This protein has been identified by Park and James (2005). The gene is amplified and expressed at high levels in tumors that also have amplified EGF receptor genes. Ectopic expression of ECop increases NF-kappa-B transcriptional activity and confers resistance to cell death by apoptosis. Reducing the expression of ECop increases susceptibility to apoptosis. The pro-apoptotic effect of ECop knock-down is due the inhibition of NF-kappa-B activation caused by a delayed degradation of I-kappa-B kinase-alpha.
