[deformed] This Drosophila melanogaster gene (gene: CG2189) belongs to the Antennapedia homeobox family. It is a sequence-specific transcription factor that is involved in providing cells with specific positional identities on the anterior-posterior axis. Dfd is a homeotic gene necessary for proper specification of both the embryonic and the adult head (Regulski et al, 1987; Merrill et al, 1987).
The Dfd protein contributes to the maintenance of intersegmental boundaries through the regional activation of apoptosis. This involves direct regulation of the apoptosis activator reaper (Lohmann et al, 2002) and the interaction of Dfd with a set of other transcription factors
