Decorin (approved gene symbol DCN) is a small chondroitin/dermatan sulfate proteoglycan (75 % chondroitin sulfate and 23 % dermatan sulfate) (Iwafune M et al, 2002; Brennan et al, 1984; Krusius and Ruoslahti, 1986) that 'decorates' collagen fibrils (Rioslahti, 1988). The core protein (329 amino acids) has been termed PG40 [proteoglycan 40 kDa] by Krusius and Ruoslahti (1986). Decorin has been isolated as a noncollagenous protein from developing human bone by Fisher et al (1987), who referred to it as bone proteoglycan-2 (abbr. PG2, PG II; don't confuse with PRG2, which is the approved gene symbol for proteoglycan-2
