(approved gene symbol) DEK is a highly conserved oncogene identified first as part of a fusion protein resulting from a t(6;9) translocation found in a subset of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (von Lindern et al, 1992, 1992). The DEK protein is conserved widely among species and is transcribed at high levels, especially in hematopoietically derived cells (von Lindern et al, 1992, 1992, 1992).
The DEK gene encodes a conserved nuclear protein that is involved in global heterochromatin integrity, transcription, DNA replication, and DNA repair, and is implicated in gene regulation (Kappes et al, 2011; Waldmann et al, 2003).
