[Beta-Defensin-126] This defensin is encoded by open reading frame C20orf8 [chromosome 20 open reading frame 8] (databank synonym and previous gene symbol).
DEFB126 coats the entire primate sperm surface and is a candidate for providing immune protection in the female reproductive tract. DEFB126 protects the entire primate sperm surface from immune recognition. Its sialic acid moieties are responsible for the cloaking characteristic of this unique glycoprotein (Yudin et al, 2005).
This protein is a Beta-Defensin and has been described also as DEFB26 [Beta-Defensin-26]. It has been identified independently as ESP13.2 [
