[dauer formation-7] This is a Caenorhabditis elegans homolog of TGF-beta (Ren et al, 1996). The protein is expressed by chemosensory neurons in a larval-stage specific pattern and is involved in dauer larva formation (Inoue and Thomas, 2000), which is a specialized way of dispersal without growth under conditions of overcrowding and limited food.
