Cytomegalovirus US11 protein

This protein encoded in the genome of human cytomegalovirus suppresses antigen presentation to CD8(+) cytotoxic T-lymphocytes and therefore acts as an immunoevasin, hindering viral clearance by cytotoxic T-cells. US11 has a combined endoplasmic reticulum retention and degradation function (Stagg et al, 2009; van den Boomen et al, 2014; Noriega et al, 2012). US11 binds MHC-1 in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum and employs the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway, which retro-translocates misfolded endoplasmic reticulum proteins to the cytosol for proteasomal degradation. The mechanism involves interaction with Derlin-1 (Lilley and Ploegh, 2004; Van den Boomen et al, 2014; van de Weijert et al, 2013).
