This is me, Horst Ibelgaufts. I did, and still do, all the work on COPE single-handedly and probably shall continue to do so in the future. I made the mistakes and am the only person to blame. I read all letters you send to COPE and, as time allows, may, or may not, respond.

If page impressions, COPE Reviews, and some correspondence are anything to go by, COPE is appreciated. This pleases me, of course, but there is one thing in particular that continues to bother me: Maybe I missed a point somewhere. Maybe, I am getting old and thus more touchy. Maybe, interpersonal relationships have become very much utalitarian of late. I always wonder whether people sending blunt unaddressed and unsignatured "hey, I need to know...." emails really do expect an answer. Is it really asking too much and too old-fashioned already to expect a little bit of simple courtesy? Some people even have gone as far as telling me that they would send weekly email reminders as long as they do not receive an answer. Oh well.
I am also a bit disappointed about the feedback to my HELP REQUEST. Is it really asking too much?
I always welcome letters and appreciate feedback (see contact details at the end of the page).
Use an informative subject line! Failing to do so increases the risk of your email joining others in the junk mail or spam folder.
Do write in, please, about:
• sponsoring COPE (see: HELP REQUEST)
• postcard and stampware
• corrections
• suggestions for new entries
• information about identities of factors
• COPEAdopt and CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
• broken links or unlinked entries (which can be due only to spelling errors)
• web pages stealing and presenting COPE contents as their own work
• feedback about the usefulness of COPE
• inquiries about consultancy (scientific translations, editorial work on publications (see also: Zzzz ... zzzz ... zzzz))
I usually do respond to serious correspondence, but if you expect an answer make sure that you can be reached. Sometimes the remote mailer demon returns my reply because:
• the recipient and also the postmaster do not exist
• acceptance of my email is denied
• a permanent fatal error has occurred - whatever that may be.
Don’t contact me if you only want to:
• grumble about the fact that COPE is not peer-reviewed. I am quite content with the way it is and with the COPE credentials
• discuss scientific priorities and personal vanities (as reflected by citations, or their absence, in COPE entries)
• grumble about the layout of COPE. I strongly believe in simplicity and functionality and in contents over form.
• grumble about advertisements on COPE pages. I badly need this support and really could do with more. I live in a developing country now - yes, on a local income, and you would be surprised or shocked how little this is.
• ask me to ghost-write a scientific review or a masteral/doctoral thesis for you. No amount of money will induce me to do this, but I might feel tempted to publish a copy of your letter on COPE pages.
• ask me to help you in formulating your research projects
• ask me to help you with your marketing decisions about existing/future products. Indeed, I do accept consulting work, but not for free.
• propose fancy schemes to increase traffic to the COPE site.
• discuss spelling conventions
Please note that I cannot provide:
• the source code of the CataCopia programme generating hypertexted COPE pages
• a free CD-ROM version of COPE. I am still waiting for that company who will sponsor such a thing
• medical advice, suggestions, opinions about personal medical/clinical problems and/or conditions that may, or may not, involve cytokines, or use of cytokines, in clinical practice
• information about specialists and clinics using cytokines
• information about patient support groups
• information about suppliers of cytokines or related reagents
• information about sources of cells described in Cell lines in Cytokine Research
My email address that you are looking for is under COPE Contact Information.
