abbr. Chn. This is a Drosophila melanogaster gene (gene CG11798) encoding a C2H2-type zinc finger protein resembling human neuronal restricted silencing factor/repressor element RE-1 silencing transcription factor (NRSF/REST) (Escudero et al, 2005). It is involved in the regulation of neuronal cell differentiation in developing photoreceptor cells (Tsuda et al, 2006). Charlatan is required also for the proper development of the embryonic peripheral nervous system, as its absence leads to loss of neurons and causes aberrant development of chordotonal organs (Escudero et al, 2005).
