Caveolin is an integral membrane protein of 21-24 kDa and the main component of specialized plasma membrane structures called caveolae. It is being referred to also as caveolae protein 1 or caveolae protein 22 kDa.
Caveolae are characterized by an accumulation of cytoplasmically oriented signal molecules, which suggests that they may be involved in the compartmentalization of signaling processes (Scherer et al, 1995, 1996). The murine caveolin-1 genes encodes two caveolin isoforms,
