Catalase

This enzyme (EC1.11.1.6) is encoded by the CAT gene (Quan et al, 1986; Bell et al, 1986). cDNA sequences derived from spliced and unspliced catalase mRNA have been described by Korneluk et al (1984). The gene has features of a typical housekeeping gene, is expressed ubiquitously, may show altered expression levels in cancers, and is subject to regulation by a variety of transcription factors (for overview see: Glorieux C et al, 2015).

Catalase is a tetrameric heme-containing mainly peroxisomal enzyme that serves to protect cells from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide by conversion of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water (for overview on structure, function, and mechanism of action of human catalase see: Kirkman and Gaetani, 2007; Goyal and Basak, 2010; Nicholls, 2012).
