This Drosophila melanogaster protein, encoded by gene CG8400, has been identified by Kim et al (2006) as a suppressor of immune responses. Caspar is considered to be the homolog of mammalian FAF-1 [FAS associated factor-1]. Mutants lacking expression of Caspar show increased antibacterial immune responses, including increased resistance to bacterial infection and a constitutive expression of the antibacterial protein diptericin.
Ectopic expression of Caspar strongly suppresses the infection-dependent gene expression of diptericin. Caspar negatively regulates immune responses mediated by imd [Immune Deficiency] through inhibiting the nuclear translocation of Relish
