this term (Couillault et al, 2004) refers to a family of small closely related secreted peptides identified in Caenorhabditis elegans. Caenacins are thought to be involved in innate immunity. The expression of some members of this family has been shown to be upregulated in response to pathogen infection. Zugasti and Ewbank (2009) have reported that the expression of some caenacin genes enhances survival after fungal infection.
Caenacin-2 [abbr. cnc-2] encodes one of eleven C. elegans caenacin peptides; cnc-2 functions as a secreted antimicrobial peptide in the innate immune response. Neuronal expression of the TGF-beta homolog dbl-1 promotes
