[C-reactive protein] Human CRP is a protein of 206 amino acids (Lei et al, 1985; Woo et al, 1985) that belongs to a family of proteins known as pentraxins. CRP is comprised of five identical subunits with a combined molecular mass of 110 kDa (Myles et al, 1990).
The name of this protein reflects the way in which it was identified, namely as a substance that reacts with pneumococcal C-polysaccharide (Tillett and Francis, 1930; Abernethy and Avery, 1941). Volanakis and Kaplan (1971) have identified the specific ligand for CRP in the pneumococcal C-polysaccharide as phosphocholine, part of the teichoic acid of the pneumococcal cell wall.
