Some people have told me that all this legal stuff is necessary. So be it - even though, as a dictionary maker committed to this work, it makes me feel all awkward and uncomfortable. I almost feel compelled to add the clause that "no animals were harmed in, and no criminals had profits from, the production of the COPE web site" (I did feed the cat regularly. I admit, however, that I sprayed cockroaches. But what if YOU got so carried away with the contents of COPE that you did not feed the cat or walked the dog or whatever?). Should I add also that no scientists were harmed (other than myself, maybe?). But maybe all this would be carrying things too far, really.
