[Colony-forming unit megakaryocyte; megakaryocyte colony-forming cells; megakaryocyte colony-forming units] Also abbr. CFU-Mk. Term used to describe an early precursor cells in the developmental lineage giving rise to megakaryocytes, which is more developed than the precursor type described as BFU-Mk (burst forming unit megakaryocyte) (see also: hematopoiesis).
CFU-MEG can be identified in a colony formation assay by the specific morphology of the cells. These cells express the cell surface markers CD34 and HLA-DR.
