[Cobblestone area-forming cells] This primitive cell type has been observed in Dexter-type long-term bone marrow cultures of murine cells utilizing layers of primary stromal cells reseeded with hematopoietic cells.
These cells are detected in limiting dilution analysis and resemble cells from the so-called cobblestone area morphologically defined as active zones of hematopoiesis in vivo. Such cells and/or close relatives can be enriched and studied further by treatment with such agents as Fluorouracil or cyclophosphamide and its derivatives.
