[Conserved Anti-Apoptotic Protein] This evolutionarily highly conserved and ubiquitously expressed protein has been identified by Zhang et al (2011). It is encoded by open reading frame C9orf82 [chromosome 9 open reading frame 82]. The approved gene symbol is CAAP1 [caspase activity and apoptosis inhibitor 1].
The protein shows structural similarities to the death effector domain of apoptosis-related proteins. Knock-down of CAAP expression induces cell death by apoptosis in A549 and MCF7/casp3-10b lung and breast carcinoma cells, respectively, but not in cells lacking caspase-3,
