[C-cell]
The term C-cells was introduced by Pease (1996) to reflect the ability of these cells to produce calcitonin. These endocrine cells are called also calcitonin cells or thyroid parafollicular cells (parafollicular cells) (Nonidez, 1932, 1932; Roediger, 1975; Kameda, 1968, 1971) (for overview of histology and anatomy see: Kroon et al, 1958; Hazard, 1977; Faour and Gilloteaux, 2017).
The term macrothyrocyte (also, but rarely: macrothyreocytes) has been used to refer to C-cells (Zechel, 1933), and these cells are also being referred to as C thyrocytes to contrast them with follicular cells termed
