Boundary cells are a distinct cell type with an elongated shape located between hindbrain segments called rhombomeres (Heyman et al, 1995). The seven rhombomeres are formed transiently along the anterior-posterior axis of the developing vertebrate hindbrain. Each rhombomere is a cell-lineage restricted, morphologically and molecularly distinct segmental unit that corresponds to a distinct Hox expression domain and ultimately serves to organize the development of neuronal populations and their projections. Boundary cells display a reduced proliferation rate compared to intra-rhombomeric cells.
