abbr. Vag8. Vag8 is a 95 kDa autotransporter protein of Bordetella pertussis (Henderson et al, 2004; Parkhill et al, 2003). These transporter proteins function to circumvent constrains in the uptake and secretion of solutes and polypeptides imposed by the presence of the outer membrane layer. Vag8 is characterized by the presence of a surface-exposed passenger domain that provides the effector function, and a translocator domain that is involved in secretion and anchoring of the Vag8 passenger to the bacterial surface.
Marr et al (2011) have reported that Vag8 is an immune evasion protein. It is a binding factor for the complement regulatory protein C1INH. Vag8
