This term refers to a family of small secreted effector peptides of unknown biochemical activity identified by bioinformatic analysis in Drosophila melanogaster.
Bomanins are induced specifically by Toll signaling and play a role in innate immunity. Inactivation of ten of these genes does not affect Toll signaling but decreases survival upon microbial infection to the same extent, and with the same specificity, as the elimination of Toll pathway function. Bomanins are required for resistance to, rather than tolerance of, infection, and there is overlap in Bomanin activity toward particular pathogens.
