Big Defensin

A protein of 79 amino acids related to Defensins. It is present in both large and small granules of horseshoe crab hemocytes (Tachypleus tridentatus).

The carboxyterminal 37 residues of this protein have a sequence similar to those of mammalian defensins found in neutrophils, especially rat defensin. The disulfide array is identical with that of beta-Defensins from bovine neutrophils.

Big defensin has an extension of the aminoterminal hydrophobic sequence with 35 amino acid residues followed by the carboxyterminal cationic defensin portion.

Big Defensin strongly inhibits the growth of Gram-negative bacteria and ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
