The beta-catenin, sometimes termed also cadherin-associated protein-beta, protein shares 70 % amino acid identity with plakoglobin (catenin-gamma), a protein found in desmosomes in association with E-cadherin (McCrea et al, 1991; Pfeifer et al, 1992), and the product of the Drosophila melanogaster segment polarity gene Armadillo (gene: CG11579; gene symbol: arm) (Peifer and Wieschaus, 1990; Pfeifer et al, 1992; Riggleman B et al, 1990), which is considered the fly ortholog of vertebrate beta-catenin.
