The gene encoding B7S1 [B7 superfamily member 1] has been identified by Zang et al (2003). The B7-H4 [B7 homolog-4] protein (282 amino acids) has been isolated independently by Sica et al (2003). Zang et al (2003) have identified the same protein as B7x. The approved gene symbol is VTCN1 [V-set domain containing T-cell activation inhibitor 1].
B7x is a member of a larger protein family (B7), which play important roles in cell-mediated immune responses by providing co-stimulatory signals to T-cells. Unlike other members of this family, B7x is a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked cell membrane protein. The protein is expressed on the surface of antigen-presenting cells
