Apoptin
a protein of 121 amino acids encoded by chicken anemia virus (CAV). Apoptin is a nonstructural viral protein encoded by the viral VP3 gene (chicken anemia virus VP3 protein) (Noteborn, 2004).
Apoptin was identified as a protein inducing cell death by apoptosis in chicken mononuclear cells (Jeurissen et al, 1992). In vitro, expression of Apoptin induces cell death by apoptosis in cells that are susceptible to CAV infection (T-cells, myeloid cells) but not in embryo fibroblasts, which are not susceptible to CAV
