Alternative designation: Annexin A2. Abbr. ANX2. The approved gene symbol is ANXA2.
The annexin protein family is comprised of at least ten mammalian genes (Smith and Moss, 1994). All annexins bind calcium and phospholipids in the presence of calcium. It has been suggested that these proteins may play a role in membrane trafficking events such as exocytosis, endocytosis and cell-cell adhesion (Swairjo and Seaton, 1994). They may provide a major pathway for communication between cellular membranes and their cytoplasmic environment. The protein has been identified independently as PAP-4 [placental anticoagulant protein 4], Lipocortin-2, Endonexin-2, and Calpactin-1
