The protein shows sequence similarity with proteasome components and is being referred to in databanks also as 26S proteasome regulatory subunit S5A. The approved gene symbol is PSMD4 [proteasome (prosome, macropain) 26S subunit].
Angiocidin has been isolated by Zhou et al (2004) by virtue of its ability to bind to the CSVTCG (cys-ser-val-thr-cys-gly) sequence contained within Thrombospondin-1.
The purified recombinant protein has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of tumor growth of Lewis Lung carcinoma in vivo and tumor invasion and angiogenesis in vitro. Angiocidin also inhibits tumor cell and endothelial cell proliferation and induces cell death by apoptosis
