a recombinant human IL1 receptor antagonist (IL1ra; tradename Kineret) that differs from the native protein by the addition of a single methionine residue at its amino terminus. The drug has been approved for use in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It has been shown to inhibit cell death by apoptosis in experimental acute myocardial infarction (Abbate et al, 2008).
