The cDNA encoding adipoQ has been isolated by Hu et al (1996). The cDNA encodes a secreted protein that shares significant homology with subunits of complement factor C1q, collagen alpha 1(X), and the brain-specific factor cerebellin. Murine and rat adipoQ expression is highly specific to adipose tissue and observed exclusively in mature fat cells. Hormone-induced differentiation of cultured 3T3-F442A and 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes dramatically increases adipoQ expression levels. adipoQ mRNA expression levels are reduced significantly adipose tissues from obese mice and humans.
