This glycoprotein of 14.7 kDa is encoded by the nonessential E3 early multi-gene transcription unit in the genomes of various serotypes of adenoviruses (Horton et al, 1990). Adenovirus E3 14.7 kDa protein is a cytoplasmic protein synthesized after adenoviral infection. The protein is involved in the interaction of the virus with the host immune system. A functionally related protein has been found in the genome of bovine adenovirus type 3 (see: 121R).
The viral protein protects adenovirus-infected cells against cytolysis and apoptosis induced by TNF-alpha, which may allow viruses to establish a persistent infection (Gooding et al, 1990). Tollefson et al (2001) have shown that Adenovirus E3 14.7 kDa protein prevents apoptosis of virus-infected human cells
