[apolipoprotein L6, apolipoprotein L-VI] also: APOL-VI [apolipoprotein L-VI]. APOL6 is the approved gene symbol.
Apolipoprotein L6 is a member of the high density lipoprotein family, members of which play a central role in cholesterol transport. The gene encoding APOL6 has been cloned by Page et al (2001).
Liu et al (2005) have identified APOL6 as a BH3-only protein, containing a single BH3 domain. Overexpression of wild-type APOL6 in colorectal cancers cells induces cell death by apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. This activity requires the BH3 domain
