[apolipoprotein L1] The cDNA for this protein has been cloned by Duchateau et al (1997). The authors have shown that the protein is part of a protein family (Duchateau et al, 2001). The genomic structure has been reported by Page et al (2001). Zhaorigetu et al (2008) have reported that APOL1 contains a BH3 domain (see also: BH3-only proteins).
APOL1 is expressed ubiquitously, with highest levels in lung, spleen, prostate, and placenta, and weak expression in fetal brain and pancreas (Page et al, 2001; Monajemi et al, 2002).
