[annexin repeats] This protein domain of approximately 70 amino acids is found in a family of at least 10 structurally related calcium- and phospholipid-binding mammalian proteins called annexins. Additional representatives are found in lower eukaryotes (Smith and Moss, 1994). Each protein consists of a conserved core domain having four (or eight) repeats and a nonconserved, usually short, amino-terminal domain. These repeats are thought to form a binding site for calcium ions and phospholipids (Ernst et al, 1991; Johnsson and Weber, 1990).
