[Angiotensin-binding protein; angiotensin-2 binding protein] This protein was discovered in the course of work directed at the identification of receptors for angiotensin-2 (Hagiwara et al, 1989; Kiron and Soffer, 1989). Kato et al (1994) have shown that this protein possesses thiol- and metal-dependent oligopeptidase activity.
A comparison of published sequences (Sugiura et al, 1992; McKie et al, 1993; Kato et al, 1994) shows that the protein is the same as an enzyme termed MEP [microsomal endopeptidase]. The enzyme has been identified independently as Oligopeptidase M. The approved name is neurolysin (approved gene symbol: NLN).
