This protein (38 kDa) of unknown function is localized on the membrane of mitochondria. It is called also APO2.7 after the monoclonal antibody recognizing this antigen. Expression of the 7A6 protein appears to be an early event in the apoptosis process. Normal viable cells are negative or weakly positive for APO2.7. The antigen occurs on the membrane of mitochondria in human cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Zhang et al, 1996) and is used to identify such cells (Koester et al, 1997, 1998; Büssing et al, 1999; see also: apoptosis assays).
