abbr. wa-2. The wa-2 mutation (mouse chromosome 11) exhibits skin and eye abnormalities that are strikingly similar to those of deficiencies in TGF-alpha. Wa-2 mice also show less mammary development than wild-type mice (Sebastian et al, 1998). Homozygous wa-2 mice also exhibit cardiac semilunar valve enlargement resulting from over-abundant mesenchymal cells (Chen et al, 2000).
The wa-2 phenotype has been shown to result from a single-nucleotide transversion in the receptor gene of EGF, substituting a glycine for a conserved valine residue near the amino terminus of the tyrosine kinase domain
