This peptide is released from the fusion protein F of the Pneumovirus Bovine respiratory syncytial virus, which, together with the large attachment protein G, mediates binding of virus to cells. Fusion protein F is responsible also for fusion of viral and cell membranes. The F protein, which is indispensable for virus replication and processed into a 2 subunit fusion-active by endoprotease furin. This processing step also releases an N-glycosylated peptide of 27 amino acids (pep27) (Gonzalez-Reyes et al, 2001; Zimmer et al, 2001). pep27 is further subjected to post-translational modifications and is converted into virokinin (GIPELIHYTRNSTKKFYGLMamide), which is a member of the tachykinin family (Zimmer et al, 2003).
