The two antimicrobial peptides strongylocin 1 (IFGSIYHRKCVVKNRCETVSGHKTCKDLTCCRAVIFRHERPEVCRPQT) and strongylocin 2 (WNPFKKIANRNCYPKTTCETAGGKKTCKDFSCCQIVLFGKKTRAKCTVVTS) have been isolated from coelomocyte extracts of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Li et al, 2008). The two peptides have putative isoforms (strongylocin 1b and, strongylocin 2a, strongylocin 2b), similar to two putative proteins from the purple sea urchin S. purpuratus. Native strongylocins are cationic, cysteine-rich peptides resembling defensins, but show no similarity to other known antimicrobial peptides
