scolexin 1 and scolexin 2 (or Scolexin A and Scolexin B (Finnerty et al, 1999) are isoforms of lectin-like immune proteins (2 subunits of 36 kDa) isolated from hemolymph of Manduca sexta (Kyriakides et al, 1995). The protein has hemocyte coagulation-provoking activity and plays a role in insect immunity (Minnick et al, 1986). Synthesis increases after bacterial injection in the epidermis and the midgut (Molnár et al, 2001). Scolexin synthesis is induced by baculovirus infection and after injection with yeast or lipopolysaccharide from Serratia marcescens (Finnerty and Granados, 1997).
