[roundabout; also: roundabout 1]; also: D-Robo1 to distinguish it from the human Robo-1 gene. The robo gene (CG13521) has been identified by a mutation that causes a defect in growth cone guidance and affects the development of CNS axon pathways in the Drosophila melanogaster embryo. Mutations in robo lead to misrouting of neurons, such that some growth cones that normally extend only on their own side now project across the midline (Seeger et al, 1993). Robo family proteins are immunoglobulin-type cell surface receptors that are expressed predominantly in the nervous system and have been found also in other organisms.
