abbr. and approved gene symbol: RGN; abbr. sometimes RC. Regucalcin was identified originally as a calcium-binding protein from rat liver (Yamaguchi and Yamamoto, 1978). It differs from calmodulin and other calcium-related proteins and plays a regulatory role in calcium-dependent and -independent signaling processes in various tissues and cell types (for overview see: Yamaguchi M, 2005, 2011).
This protein has been identified independently as SMP30 [senescence marker protein-30], a distinctive protein the expression of which in the liver, kidney, and lung decreases in an androgen-independent manner with aging (Fujita et al, 1992).
