Polyphemusin-1 (RRWCFRVCYRGFCYRKCRamide) and Polyphemusin-2 (RRWCFRVCYKGFCYRKCRamide) are cationic peptides identified in acid extracts of hemocytes of the American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) (Miyata et al, 1989). The two peptides inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria and also of fungi, such as Candida albicans M9. Zhang et al (2000) have designed structural variants of polyphemusin-1 that show an improved ability to protect mice both against infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and from endotoxaemia.
