[odontoblast]
Odontoblasts are highly specialized tall columnar cells located at the periphery of the dental pulp. The term odontocytes has been proposed by Larmas (2008) for resting odontoblasts involved in secondary dentinogenesis, at least in teeth with closed apices, on the basis of their function and properties, which correspond to those of osteocytes in bone. Zajicek G (1976) had already pointed out that the '-cyte' suffix should be used to refer to mature cells. Thus, odontoblasts mature to become odontocytes.
The cells are organized as a single layer of highly polarized and differentiated post-mitotic cells
