[microRNA]
abbr. miRNAs, miRs) MicroRNAs are an abundant, evolutionarily conserved, class of small, non-protein-coding RNA transcripts. These endogenous RNAs with unique sequences of 19-25 nucleotides are either the sole transcriptional products of microRNA genes that are located throughout the genome (Bartel, 2004; Rodriguez A et al, 2004; Hammond, 2015), or the product of a microRNA coding sequence located within an intron or untranslated region of a protein-coding gene. Many microRNAs occur in clusters on chromosomes, also within a single intron, and are co-transcribed as polycistronic transcripts (Poliseno et al, 2010; Ventura et al, 2008; Guo L et al, 2014; Sun J et al, 2013).
