Lumbricin-1 is a proline-rich antimicrobial peptide of 62 amino acids derived from a precursor of 76 amino acids isolated from the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus (Cho et al, 1998). The lumbricin-1 gene is expressed specifically in adult worms and is not expressed in young worms or eggs. For a related protein see: lumbricin-PG.
Lumbricin-1 is expressed constitutively. Lumbricin-1 shows antimicrobial activity in vitro against a broad spectrum of microorganisms without hemolytic activity. A 29 amino acid peptide, lumbricin-1(6-34) is marginally more active.
