halictines are antimicropbial peptides isolated from the venom of the eusocial bee Halictus sexcinctus (Monincová L et al, 2010). The two identified peptides are Halictine 1 (GMWSKILGHLIRamide), and Halictine 2 (GKWMSLLKHILKamide). Both peptides show potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria but also noticeable hemolytic activity.
Wang J et al (2014) have reported that Halictine 2 adopts a significant degree of beta-strand structure in the presence of LPS and that LPS is capable of inducing Halictine-2 amyloid formation, which may play a role in its antimicrobial activity.
