Glypicans constitute a family of heparan sulfate proteoglycans whose members are characterized by a similar core protein size and almost complete conservation of cysteine residues (Fransson, 2003). They are attached to the cell surface by a glycosylphosphatidyl inositol anchor, which may affect their endocytic pathways, cause higher lateral mobility, and possible apical localisation in a cell. Variations in their heparan sulfate contents may also affect localisation and affect binding properties for a variety of growth factors, bestowing unique biological function upon each family member (Herndon et al, 1999). The role of glypicans as essential modulators of key regulatory proteins such as Wnt family members, members of the family of bone morphogenetic proteins and fibroblast growth factors
